It’s that time of year. Here at Together Book Club we have lots to be grateful for, number one among them great books and great facilitators. If anyone is reading this instead of stuffing themselves silly with thanksgiving treats, I have an equally silly Graveyard Book question:
If you were directing a movie version of the book, who would you cast? The only good one I came up with was Alan Rickman as Silas, you know, the guy who played Snape in the Harry Potter movies. What do you think? Who would play Jack? Maybe Johnny Depp? What about Bod? I’d love to hear what you think.

The park by my house
If you listened to the interview I linked to in my last post, you’ll know that Neil Gaiman got his inspiration for the book from a cemetery close to his house. I live near a large park and his story got me thinking about all the stories that could take place in the park. I also just finished reading Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick, part of which takes place in the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan. There’s something really interesting and inspiring about setting a story in a special public place like a museum, park, or graveyard. I think it’s because I already have such interesting associations with graveyards and with the Natural History Museum. What about you? Can you think of a special place near where you live that might evoke a story?

I found this wonderful interview from NPR with Neil Gaiman about The Graveyard Book and had to share it with Together Book Club. The questions are from kids all over the country who read the book. There are excerpts, kids asking their questions themselves, and Neil Gaiman’s amazing responses. One of my favorite parts is when Neil Gaiman talks about how he got the names for the book from actual gravestones. Do not miss listening!
